It was supposed to be a "guitar solo" feature where you can slide over the notes to play them. From my experience it didn't work too well so I stuck with the normal buttons. on tapping sections (the ones with the purple lines connecting the notes, NOT bass drum or open string notes), you can use the touch strip or the buttons to tap the notes without strumming.
